"Somewhere...somewhere in time's own space, there must be some sweet pastured place, where creeks sing on and tall trees grow, a place where forgotten horses can go." - Author Unknown
At the very beginning of establishing this sanctuary, Jim and I made the decision to handle the care of the horses on our own, rather than using volunteers. And although caring for this many horses takes precedence over going out to dinner or to a movie, or even going on vacation at the same time, in 15 years of running Proud Spirit we have never regretted our decision, or felt overwhelmed by our commitment to these horses.
All that said, we simply could not run a facility of this size without knowing that we have someone to rely on. Jim and I are very grateful to have my niece, Sarah and her husband Stephen living right around the corner from us (Their 40 acres almost adjoins our land). They are an integral part of our lives, including the day to day operation of Proud Spirit, and we don't know what we'd do without them. There are very few constants in life, but Sarah and Stephen are two of them. And I'm comforted every time Sarah tells me, "Don't worry Auntie Mel...I've got your back."
